Gongguan Elementary School March Short a and Long a Phonics Lesson Plan & Reflection
In this lesson, students were exposed to pronunciation rules for short a and long a phonics.
 
Learning objectives included
1. demonstrating understanding of blending to correctly pronounce words with long a and short a vowels
2. demonstrating reading fluency and understanding by reading texts populated by words with target phonics and previously studied vocabulary words and structures.
3. demonstrating comprehension of a reading text by correctly answering 5W + H comprehension questions.
 
Students we exposed to phonics rules for vowel sounds and were able to appreciate the complexity of English phonics. Unlike Chinese phonemes, individual phonemes in English are quite fluid and their pronunciation is affected by phonetic contexts. Students were also exposed to a number of speaking, reading, writing, and listening activities to help them develop capacity for correct pronunciation.
 
However, phonics instruction has several caveats, including the folly of teaching long and short vowels sounds in a single session. This is strongly advised against even for teaching native speakers. The similarity of the sounds as well as the application of the Magic e Rule confuses learners (The Magic e Rule indicates that when you add an ‘e’ to CVC words e.g. cap, the short ‘a’ changes short ‘a’ into long a i.e. cape).
