The educational landscape, particularly in recent times, has shifted dramatically shifted from direct instruction and face-to-face interaction to online based, self-paced and self-managed instruction. It is therefore imperative that 21st century teachers retool and upgrade instructional skills to cater for the digital generation and effectively design, deliver and manage learning environments both face-to-face and online. The workshop conducted by Randall James - Using Digital Multimodality to Enhance and Motivate Student Learning - introduced teachers to both traditional and digital forms of multimodal texts and publications, the online platforms that they can be hosted on (including Learning Management Systems or LMS such as Moodle, Google, Classroom, Schoology), and the theoretical justifications for implementing such an approach. In a practical, hands-on activity, teachers used the resources available in a specially designed Google Classroom to complete a multimodal publication. Among the submissions were highly detailed posters showing speciality foods in Taiwan, a PowerPoint with an sequence of animated instructions, and a Microsoft Word worksheet dealing with diet and food groups. By all accounts, the workshop was a success. The facilitator received a number of requests for a follow-up workshop.
