Reflections on the Picture Book Sharing Tour – Tai Shing Elementary School, Tai’an: 19 May 2026
Written by Yusuf Khota, EERC English Teaching Consultant
Today we visited Tai Shing Elementary school, an experimental Atayal school in Miaoli County and saw something wonderful. Teacher Steve taught storytelling with \"Harrold Loves His Woolly Hat\" and teacher Alvin used \"Milo\'s Monster\" with grades four, five, and six.
The moment we arrived, the students were excited to meet foreign teachers. They engaged with us throughout the lessons, following along eagerly as Steve and Alvin brought the stories to life. What made us happy was seeing how much the students enjoyed the stories and how interested they were in learning.
Our EERC teachers use techniques that really work. They combine pictures with sound and music—research shows this helps students remember vocabulary better. They ask questions that help students understand, and they use movement and emotions to make learning stick. The students learned new vocabulary and sentence patterns, and every activity was designed to help them understand and follow along.
The whole school was welcoming and supportive. Every staff member and student helped create an environment where English learning feels safe, fun, and exciting.
This is the kind of work our EERC teachers do every day—bringing stories and meaningful learning to schools across Miaoli County, especially to communities like this where students might not otherwise get to experience English. Thank you to Tai Shing Elementary School for opening your doors and believing in the power of storytelling.
